The Venetian medium makes colours easier to apply whilst smoothing and moulding the paint on the canvas. Made using beeswax, the full-bodied medium enables artists to paint in “half-paste” when applied pure and makes it easier to superimpose layers.
Drying rapidly when applied with a brush or knife, it is ideal for painting “alla prima” and juxtaposing brush strokes to vary the shades whilst still wet or to “paint from life” like the impressionists. Diluted to 50% with odourless oil or turpentine oil, it enables painters to obtain a satin-effect glazed finish with a “sfumato” look (a smooth and translucent texture with an imperfect, smoke-like look used to render evanescent colour).
